There are a number of signs that something may be wrong with your line:
No dial tone
No incoming calls
Inability to make outgoing calls
Noises on the line or poor sound quality
Inability to connect to the Internet
A lot of problems with BT- lines can be resolved by a few simple tests. Save time and potential charges for an unnecessary engineers visit by going to Troubleshooting.
How will I know if the fault is on my line, inside or outside the property, or at the BT exchange?
The first step in the process of reporting a fault is the real-time line check. This is an automated test done by the BT test centre. Usually it will give us some idea of the nature of the fault and its location. Once we've carried out this test you can use the results to make a decision about what to do next.
How will I get the results of my online line check?
The test results will appear on screen. Below these results there will be an area headed What to do next. You can choose from the options in that section.
My line-check result said ‘We can't detect a problem with this line’. But my phone still isn't working. What do I do now?
Check your phone set-up and connections. If you can't fix the fault yourself, schedule a BT engineer visit. Please note there may be a charge if it's something you could have fixed on your own.
