BT Webwise is a free, service which BT is considering introducing for BT Broadband customers. It automatically adds an additional layer of protection against online fraud by checking the sites you visit against a list of suspected fraudulent and untrustworthy websites and warning you so you if you attempt to visit a site on the list. BT Webwise also personalises the online advertising you see when browsing on participating websites by linking ads to your interests. For example, if you search for a weekend trip to Paris or visit pages related to Paris, BT Webwise would replace the standard ads that would normally appear with advertising relating to travel or hotels information. You won't see any more adverts than you normally do - they'll simply be more relevant.
BT Webwise has not yet been launched. We completed a trial of BT Webwise with a small proportion of BT Total Broadband customers between 30th September and 10th December 2008.
On 6th July 2009 BT announced that, whilst it continues to believe that interest based advertising and BT Webwise offer major benefits for consumers and publishers alike, given our public commitment to developing next generation broadband and television services in the UK, we have decided to weigh up the balance of resources devoted to other opportunities. Given these resource commitments, we have no immediate plans to deploy Webwise today. However, the interest based advertising market is extremely dynamic and we intend to monitor Phorm's progress with other ISPs and with Webwise Discover before finalising our plans. We will make any further announcements concerning the launch of BT Webwise on this website in due course.
