BT Broadband Talk set-up

Follow these five simple steps to set up your BT Broadband Talk service. We recommend that you print this page.

1 Sign up to BT Broadband Talk

If the Phone light on your Hub is steady blue or green, or the BBV light on your BT Voyager 220 router is steady green, you already have a BT Broadband Talk account and don't need to sign up. Please go to step 2. You'll also know whether you have an account if you received a BT Broadband Talk telephone number by email or letter.

If you don't yet have a BT Broadband Talk account, you can find out more or sign up at www.bt.com/broadbandtalk

2 Check you’ve all you need

You need a:

  • broadband connection
  • BT Home Hub or BT Voyager 220 router
  • standard touchtone phone (either corded or cordless, that isn’t being used as your main phone) or a BT Hub Phone

If you have the equipment you need, please go to step 3.

If you need any equipment...

3 Activate BT Broadband Talk

If the Phone light on your Hub is steady blue or green, or the BBV light on your BT Voyager 220 router is steady green, your BT Broadband Talk service is already activated. Please go to step 4.

If it isn't active, please log in at www.bt.com/bbt using your BT Broadband Talk number and password and follow the instructions. Your BT Broadband Talk number and password were sent to you by email or letter. If you need help remembering these, please go to www.bt.com/setup/bbtpassword

4 Connect a phone

If you have a BT Hub Phone, please follow the set-up guide that came with the phone to connect it to your Hub. If you need some extra help registering your Hub Phone to your Hub, find out more

To use a standard touchtone phone, plug this into the Phone socket (green) on the back of your Hub or into the converter on your BT Voyager 220 router.

Some tips on using BT Broadband Talk

Important: it's easy to do things yourself, such as setting up free voicemail, call forwarding, call barring and number withholding, at your BT Broadband Talk account – we suggest you bookmark this page for later use, too.

BT Answer 1571 – you can set this up at your BT Broadband Talk account. Please note that you can't personalise your 1571 message on the BT Broadband Talk service.

Calls – you can't make calls to the operator, non-BT directory enquiries or dial-up Internet Service Providers.

Dial tone – BT Broadband Talk has a high-pitched dial tone so you know you're about to make a BT Broadband Talk call.

Dialling – like a mobile phone, you'll need to dial any phone number in full (i.e. including the area code). This applies to local numbers, too.

Help – if you've a problem using BT Broadband Talk, it's likely you can fix it by simply restarting your Hub or router – this could also save you a call to the helpdesk.

Hub – your BT Home Hub must be on (but your computer can be off) to make and receive BT Broadband Talk calls.

Rates – to make calls using your normal landline, you should use the phone or phones plugged into a phone socket via an ADSL filter. You won't, however, be able to take advantage of BT Broadband Talk rates when you make calls using these phones.

Services – please note that BT Broadband Talk doesn't currently support number portability, text relay or directory enquiries for disabled customers.

* Calls to 0800 numbers are free from UK landlines. Mobile costs may vary. See www.bt.com/pricing for details. All calls made to BT or from BT may be recorded to help us give you a better service.
